Release Day Review ~ Preston's Honor by Mia Sheridan

Preston's Honor

goodreads-badge-add-38px

There were two brothers—identical twins—and though I loved them both, my soul belonged to only one.

Annalia Del Valle has loved Preston Sawyer all her life. The daughter of an impoverished migrant farmworker, she grew up as an outcast in what was no more than a tiny, cooped up shack in California’s Central Valley. But her heart found freedom in the land, in the wide-open spaces of Sawyer Farm, and in the boys who were her only friends.

Preston has yearned for Annalia since he was a boy. But a sense of honor kept him from pursuing her until he’s unable to hold back any longer and their worlds—and bodies—collide one hot summer night. A night that sets off a chain of events that will alter their lives forever.

Now Annalia is back in town after disappearing without a trace for six long months. Determined to reclaim her heart, her life, and the baby she left behind—the son who was created in a moment of lust and love and pent-up yearning.

Preston has survived grief, a ravaging drought, and the despair of heartache, but he’s not sure he can survive Annalia again. And he might be unwilling to try. Will pride and bitterness keep him from the one thing he’s always longed for?

How do you heal what is irreparably broken? How do you forgive that which is unforgivable? How do you discover that real honor comes not from circumstance, but from the place deep in our hearts where truth resides? And how do you move beyond the wounds of the past to discover that some loves are as solid as the ground beneath your feet, and as enduring as the earth itself?

"Someday I'm going to leave here, but a part of my heart is going to remain. With you."

Mia Sheridan is one of my favorite authors and I always get very excited the moment I hear about a new book. I trust Mia's writing and story-telling abilities, so I don't even check the blurbs of her books to decide if I will read it or not. I didn't know anything about this book before I started reading it. The prologue gave me a taste of what the book had in store for me. It was pretty emotional and I was anxious to find out why Annalia left everything behind.

"My heart, it seemed, knew only how to beat for him, like the wings of a bird soaring through an endless sky."

I am going to be honest and say that I mostly dislike flashbacks, especially the ones that last LONG. However I really liked it in this book. It was very essential in understanding where Annalia was coming from and how she grew up. My heart broke a million times for her, and there were a couple of things I could relate to, being a daughter of a migrant myself. Mia didn't hold back and did a great job in showing that most people leaving their home country just want a better life for themselves and their children. I was happy that she included this in the book, especially during the times we live in.

"The feeling of not belonging anywhere has followed me so relentlessly."

Preston and Annalia's relationship developed in a strange sequence. It was obvious they had a very strong connection, however because of certain things it never really went beyond a friendship. They both were yearning for each other, but they both thought the other didn't feel anything for them. They were young so I can't really blame them for not coming out and telling the other what they really felt. Especially, Annalia who felt like she wasn't worth anything. Her self-esteem was really low, and it broke my heart seeing her struggle with finding herself. The road to happiness for Preston and Lia wasn't an easy one, but it was worth it. Preston's Honor isn't my favorite Mia Sheridan book, but it was a very solid romance book. I really enjoyed it.
