Release Day Review: Black Rose by Karina Halle

From the New York Times best-selling author of River of Shadows and Black Sunshine comes a new dark gothic romance duet about how love can transcend the ages, but at a deadly cost.

Is it her destiny to love him?

Or is it her destiny to die?

Valtu Aminoff is no stranger to tragedy. Though many know him as the enigmatic vampire that inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Valtu’s complex life is far more horrific than any fiction could imagine. When you lose the love of your life over and over again, it can do more than break your heart—it can corrupt your soul.
It's up to his new lover to decide if Valtu's damaged soul is even worth saving.

But destiny isn’t done with Valtu yet. And tragedy is always around the corner.

Black Rose is the sequel to Blood Orange and is not a standalone.

Blood Orange was one of my favorite reads of 2022, and after the ending I just couldn't wait to get my hands on Black Rose. This duet is a super steamy dark gothic paranormal romance. I loved that Karina jumped right into the story. It was fast-paced with no boring moments. There are a couple of connections to characters from other novels, which was a nice surprise and fit perfectly in the book. We get a couple of scenes of what Valtu had been up to in the last two decades. It broke my heart seeing him this heartbroken. I am glad the Valtu and Rose were reunited pretty early in the story, because I think this is important for the development of the relationship. Valtu is still one HOT vampire, he was even more dark and dangerous in this book. There were a couple of scenes that were straight from a horror movie. Karina didn't hold back which I really liked.

“We are primal, we are raw, we are destined.”

Rose is such a great character. I loved how persistent and loyal she was. She fought for Valtu and her love even when Valtu wasn't able to. Rose was the stronger of the two in my opinion. She was strong in Blood Orange, but she was even stronger in this book. Both characters grow as individuals and as a couple. Karina took her time with the important scenes and spread out the scenes throughout the book. The story was unpredictable and I love the twists added to the story. Valtu has become one of my favorite book boyfriends. I love his dark and light side equally. The sex scenes were extremely hot, and the fight scenes were action-packed and bloody. This was an emotional, steamy and raw dark paranormal romance. Black Rose was a great ending to Valtu and Rose's epic love. Also, the epilogue was perfect! I really hope Karina will write more books in this world!
