The Revenge Plan

by Linda Kage
Publication date: April 29th 2019
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

After I caught my boyfriend cheating, I tried to be mature about it with an amicable split. But he took his retaliation too far, and I have officially had enough. No more Miss Nice Haven.
No one is allowed to lie to me, betray, embarrass, and devastate me, fill me with self-doubt, or put my future at risk, and expect to get away with it. He is going to feel my wrath.Enter Wick Webster, his archenemy.Nothing would provoke my ex more than to see me moving on with the one guy he hates most, so that’s exactly what I plan to do.The only hitch in my brilliant scheme is Wick himself. He’s just gotta be all love-not-war and peace-is-the-only-way. He’s more concerned about helping me heal than seeking my sweet revenge. And what the hell is it about his soothing presence and yummy looks that calls to me until I forget how much pain I’m in? He’s making it awfully hard to use and abuse him for my malicious means. The damn guy is making me fall for him.
EXCERPT:

“I’m sorry,” she sobbed, soaking my collar with tears. “I’m such a mess. I’m so sorry. I don’t know why I’m crying. Why do I just keep crying? I thought I was done with that bullshit. I never used to cry like this, especially in front of people. And now, it’s all I seem to do.”“It’s fine. Don’t apologize,” I murmured, pressing my cheek to her hair. “You’re not a mess.”“I’m a fucking mess,” she argued brokenly. “I…I…I just don’t get how things keep feeling worse and worse. When is it going to get better again?”I shook my head. “Sometimes, you have to sink all the way to the bottom of the pool before you can reach a sturdy enough base to really push yourself back up to the surface again.”“But it feels like I’ve been sinking forever,” she sobbed, clutching my shirt. “It feels like I’m drowning. Wick…”“Shh. You’re not drowning,” I assured her. “I won’t let you drown.”“Promise?”I kissed her hair. “Of course.”Nodding as if comforted, she kept her face buried in my shirt and mumbled, “Okay. Thank you. Okay. But can I… Can I hold onto you a minute longer, just until I get my balance back?”“You can hold onto me as long as you need.”

ONE REVIEWER MARKED THIS AS hero-has-sex-with-ow-while-in-love-with-heroine, which I guess is technically true, but I’d also argue it as a light gray area.  So this guy never even meets the girl until after he is with other women; he just crushes on her from afar. He throws the L-word out there a few times, but he also admits that he probably can’t really, honestly love her because he doesn’t even know her.  And she has another boyfriend, so he truly thinks it’s just unrequited longing on his part. And it’s not like he goes out and has indiscriminate sex with a multitude of random strangers, using their bodies cruelly JUST to get her off his mind or hurt her (though, no slut-shaming here…it’d be fine if he was into casual sex too!) He never uses anyone cruelly; he doesn’t hurt anyone. He is merely moving on with life, and two other women come along who give him the experience and life lessons he needs to grow into the man he becomes. And it just so happen that the woman he’s admired from afar for so long comes back around into his life after this, and this time around, he and she are both free and available to pursue something.

One REVIEW MARKED the story as “no condoms.” But I’d like to make it clear that all sex was safe and protected in some way, discussed and agreed on by both parties before they partook. There was no un-safe sex.

ONE REVIEW MARKED the story as ‘slut-shaming’ by a supporting character. True, I guess.  But it also feels a bit distorted to look worse than it is. Since I know this character, I know he doesn’t honestly care about how often someone gets around. He was just not a fan of the guy she dated, and he tried to be as crude and awful about her as he could make himself be (which is what he SHOULD be getting marked down for, in my opinion! LOL) because he didn’t WANT to like her.  It is hopefully obvious in the story that the author wasn’t trying to make any kind of message that people who have a lot of sex are bad, because there’s even a scene where someone suggests that the heroine might actually try to see if she’s into casual sex after all.

Would you describe it as fluffy, warm, angsty, dark, emotional, deep, funny? Something else?

I’d say this story is bipolar, which means I'm not totally sure what to classify it under because it goes through so many moods. I wouldn't say it's total fluff, but there's definitely some fluffiness to it. It's not meant to be a complete romantic comedy, but I certainly tried to make some funny scenes (At least I hope they're funny. There's nothing worse than trying to crack a joke, and NO ONE laughs). No darkness, but there’s maybe a splash of angst and dash of emotion. I would also hope you'd find some depth in there somewhere and meaning-to-life revelations under all the funny, emotional puffball angst. I don’t know; it probably comes across differently for each person.

Approximately how far into the book do the main couple get together?
They fully consummate things at 78% into the story.
