Book Tour: Author Interview + Top 10 List + Snippet + Giveaway - ION 417 RAIJU by James Darcey

Ion was born and raised in a secluded world, with only a sadistic doctor and his lizard lackeys for company. Her education came from carefully selected material provided by her tormentor, and the best entertainment was the exercise machine in her small room. It was the only world she knew.
The one thing that made her different than hundreds of others in similar situations, was that Ion held a power within her that was growing stronger week by week. He knew she had the power despite her efforts to hide it from him. He had created her just for that power. He was training her, but for what she didn’t know. The only thing she had going for her was that he didn’t know how strong she was getting.
Then by sheer chance, she discovered the truth of her existence. More than just the sinister plans he had for her future as his mind-wiped assassin. She had family. A family he had stolen from her.
With this discovery, she made plans of her own. Plans that had her traveling across half the galaxy in search of her mother’s people. It’s a long and dangerous journey for an inexperienced girl. How well can she trust her happenstance companions? What welcome will she find at her journey’s end?

James was born in the middle of a tropical swamp on the third planet orbiting a distant yellow star. Growing up the son of a military father meant that books were among the best friends he could have. They traveled with him every time he moved, and took him on adventures that nothing short of a trans-dimensional portal could hope to achieve.
Currently he resides in a place called Utah, on the shores of a dead sea, with his wife and fellow author Molly. His days are spent catering to the whims of machines that devour people whole, and regurgitate them at distant locations. At other times he is working on his writing. The current projects include continuing the adventures of Ion in the fourth book of the series, adding to his epic fantasy series, and the saga of the Stargate Thieves.

Author Interview

1- Tell us something about yourself, both as a writer and as a person?

I try to be accurate. When writing, I try to keep the sciences to things that are within a few steps of what is actual science.

2- Can you sum up ION-417 Raiju in one word?

Electric

3- What was one of your favorite scenes to write?

The fight on Rage's Moon. It was the first time her actions shifted from herself to others.

4- How did you come up with the idea and how did you create the characters?

Writing a back story for the game and she came alive. Now the story encompasses several books with the end still to be seen. That explains Ion. The others just blossomed as I wrote.

5- What is the most important thing you have learned since becoming an author?

Never show your first draft to anyone.

6- While you were writing, did you ever feel as if you were one of the characters?

All the time. I try to put myself into the place of the characters, to know what they would think and feel.

7- Do you listen to music as you write, and if so what music?

Actually, most of my writing happens in the lunchroom where I work. I end up with a TV blaring some program while several guys chatter about it. When I do get a chance for music, I listen to classic rock.

8- What do you think will shock readers the most in ION-417 Raiju ?

Ha ha, shocking about someone that can throw lightning bolts. Probably her acceptance by the family that took her in.

9- If you could hang out with one of the characters from ION-417 Raiju, who would you pick?

Panzo, I really get intrigued by his creativity.

10- 5 things you wish every aspiring writer would know?

1. Don't scrimp on dialog. It's the best way to let readers know your characters.
2. Back story is an anchor. It'll either steady your story, but more often drags it to the bottom. Use it sparingly and spread out through the story.
3. First drafts stink no matter who you are.
4. Never use global find and replace.
5. Consistency matters. Your readers will notice if eye color changes. Keep a character sheet for every one of your characters, and use it every time you describe them.

SNIPPET

Suddenly another masked man ran into the doors shouting to hurry up,
"Grab what you can and let's go! The police are... what the..." I didn't let him finish as another lightning bolt knocked him backward through the doors. The manager had lifted the rifle and fired at him. A mass of tiny fragments tore the air where the gunman had been standing. They shattered the glass of the door that man had walked through. Now I knew that it was just a different type of pellet gun. It would hurt a lot. The manager turned to stare at me, the rifle pointing at the ground between us. Now was the chance to break the stalemate.
"I should go."
